I’ve written about the goodbye e-mail before. (If you missed it, click here.) Many of you have asked for a sample of an appropriate email. As I was recycling old Self Magazines, I found this sample they published a few years ago:
To ____ (tailor your message to different groups, i.e. marketing, specific accounts, etc.):
After three great years (only include the actual number of years if it has been more than two), I am leaving my position at ABC Corporation. It was amazing to work with with such talented people. I am particularly proud of the teamwork we showed in winning our biggest account to date, the INC company (Highlight an achievement and acknowledge your co-workers).
Although I will miss our lively brainstorming sessions, (weave in a thoughtful detail or appropriate memory) I will bring ABC’s unique spirit of collaboration to my new position (This sentence flatters others and implies that you will become a more valuable asset). Feel free to reach me at name@email.com (check this account daily for the first month after you’ve left, less regularly after that). Sue can handle any questions that arise during this transition (be sure to check with your boss before mentioning a replacement or contact person).
Thank you again.
Obviously, be sure to tailor this to your specific position and make sure sending an e-mail is not frowned on.
