Editor’s Note: Here at Dispatches, we are always looking for ways to help our readers do things. For some of our readers, that means helping navigate the working world, for others, it means assisting in the ever challenging question,“what’s for dinner?” For still others, it means figuring out how to balance family life with everything else. In an effort to aid in all of these endeavors, we have collaborated on this article written specifically for our readers.

The phrase “I’m in the business of helping people” tends to sound like the beginning of a scam. But many people are in the business of helping people. For many, this career path almost feels like a calling. You just have to make sure you don’t come across to potential customers and clients as smarmy. There are several career paths and solopreneur opportunities that are perfect for someone who is interested in the well-being of others.

Cosmetic Enhancements
It’s easy to dismiss cosmetic improvements as just being for those who want to enhance their features. Many cosmetic procedures are as much for victims of burns and other accidents as someone looking to change the shape of their nose. Some procedures are limited to licensed dermatologists, but there are opportunities for those who haven’t gone to medical school. You’ll want to check the licensing and training requirements, but you may be able to provide clients with a facial peel, operate a laser lipo machine or create new line of skincare products.

Advising and coaching
If you have a talent for listening, giving good advice and rooting out a problem, then advising or coaching could be a good fit for you. It’s perfect if you want to start your business small and then expand. Many advisors and life coaches offer their services online, so you don’t even need an office setup until you have the funds. There’s also the chance to diversify your income streams, with books, online classes and websites.

Care Services
With an aging population, the need for care services is not going to go away anytime soon. You can create a business visiting people at home who are in need. Again, check and see what licenses and regulations you need to follow and what classes and certifications you might need.

Some of the options above require additional education, training or certification, so be sure to research what you need to do in your specific area.
