We all put off making hard choices, life changing decisions and prolong taking action in certain situations. Unfortunately, sometimes the inability to make a decision, is making a choice. Often it isn’t the best choice.

As this article on Psych Central indicates, whether it is fear or lack of information that keeps you from making a choice, there are steps you can take to help make better decisions.

  • Clearly define the problem.
  • Brainstorm your possible choices.
  • List the pros and cons of each choice.
  • Engage your feelings as well as your intellect.

Putting off making a decision is the same as not deciding. With most choices you will have to make, there is some kind of a time limit. For example if you are on the fence about dropping a class, there is a final drop date. If you are choosing between two houses or jobs and take too long, both might be unavailable by the time you decide.

The easiest way to get around this is to figure out what is holding you back, follow some steps or ask for advice and just choose. You’ll never know if you made the right decision of you never decide.

I left the journalism roller coaster world for a more stable life in corporate America only to discover it is just as volatile and has a different vocabulary.
