From Seedlings to Growing Herbs: A Week in Our Winter Garden

March update: After trying to grow these a second time, the seedlings were leggly and ultimately all died. Even with consistent watering, good light and consistent temperature the seeds did not germinate well. While the pots and soil mixture seem to be good overall, the seeds are low quality.

As someone who loves cooking with fresh herbs, I’ve always been on the lookout for an easy and efficient way to grow them at home in the middle of winter.  Being able to share the experience with my family is just as important as finding a way to make winter herb gardening easy. We were so excited to try the Deluxe Herb Garden Kit which included everything we needed to add some much-needed green to the winter.

The kit includes seeds for eight popular herbs—basil, cilantro, rosemary, parsley, dill, thyme, oregano, and chives—and instructions for how to set these seeds up for success, including suggestions for soaking while you prep the rest of the included items.

In addition to the seeds, the kit comes with eight pots, saucers, expanding soil discs, a kelp nutrition pack, and super cute herb labels. Unboxing everything took more than a minute!

Day 1: Setting Up the Seeds

The setup was a breeze. With clear instructions and everything I needed included, I had all eight seeds soaking while we added water to expand the soil discs. We added the label to the pots.

Then we mixed in the nutrition packet and added the soil to each pot and added them to our mini greenhouse with a small light to help the seeds germinate with our minimal sunshine.

Filled white herb pots on a shelf next to mint and marigolds under a small grow lamp.
We thought the herbs would get along with the mint and marigolds we are already growing.  In all, everything took about an hour from start to finish.

Day 6: Sprouts Emerge

By the sixth day, tiny sprouts had already started poking through! It was fascinating to watch the first signs of life appear so quickly! close up of basil sprouts six days after potting

We’ll be patiently waiting for the seeds to keep going! If you’re looking for a last minute holiday gift or to add some green to your own kitchen this winter, this is a great addition.
