Know when to ask and when to Google

This is the best piece of advice I’ve heard in awhile: Know when to ask and when to Google.

Eager new employees aren’t going to know everything, but especially in journalism and PR asking too many questions or asking a question that you can easily find the answer to sends the wrong message. It says you’re lazy and lack finesse.

There is a fine line between being eager and being ignorant. The easiest way to know the distinction is to ask yourself, can Google give me this answer? If the answer is yes, Google away.

If the answer is no, or the person is an expert on the subject, then ask away!

Special thanks to Jessica Malnik for reminding me about this topic on Twitter.

I left the journalism roller coaster world for a more stable life in corporate America only to discover it is just as volatile and has a different vocabulary.
