HFM relief bath

Our poor Miss A recently had the dreaded Hand, Foot and Mouth disease. She was really miserable. Our pediatrician suggested a salt and oatmeal bath to help with the itchiness and I improved on that suggestion with an oatmeal, coconut oil, Epsom salt and lavender essential oil bath. It was really easy to make and Miss A seemed to get some relief from it.

Ingredients:

  1. about a tablespoon (or more) oatmeal (if using a washcloth, don’t bother grinding)
  2. coconut oil, about a tablespoon
  3. about a teaspoon regular table salt
  4. about 1/4 cup Epsom salt
  5. few drop lavender essential oil

Directions:
Combine at least the first three ingredients (you can combine all five, we just had the lavender essential oil and the Epsom salt in the bathroom already) into a washcloth and tie with string to close.

Draw a warm bath and place the satchel under warm running water. If you didn’t add the Epsom salt and the lavender essential oil to the sachet, add it to the bath now.

Fun fact: adults can get HFM too and it’s just awful.

Easy Homemade Holiday Gift

If you’re looking for a last minute hostess gift or something for yourself, consider making a salt scrub. I know Pinterest and others are raving about sugar scrubs, but I find sugar scrubs to be stickier, messier and not as moisturizing as a good salt scrub.

Ingredients*:
1-2 cups oatmeal, finely ground (I used a coffee grinder)
1-2 cups fine salt (I found a box of sea salt on clearance at our local grocer for $1.)
1/2 cup oil of your choice (I’m partial to olive and sunflower for moisturizing, feel free to use infused, but don’t use the good stuff. This is just going to go down the drain)
If not using infused, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender is a great choice)
*depends on the size jar you’re using. I used the 8 ounce sizes.

Directions:
If the salt or oatmeal aren’t ground, do so. Add dry ingredients to the jar. Put the lid on. Shake until well mixed. remove the lid. Add oil and sir making sure there aren’t any dry spots. Put the lid on and tie with a bow.

My opinion:
I was lucky enough to receive this as a gift last year and liked it so much I had to make some of my own this year. It’s simple to use and great for dry spots. It goes on easier if applied to wet skin. For extra moisture, I use it as a soak. That way I get the most out of the ground oatmeal.

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Party Dip


I love cookie dough. And chocolate chip cookie dough is my favorite. I also know all about salmonella and the dangers of eating raw cookie dough. Now that one of my very dear friends is expecting (Congrats again!), I had to find a way to indulge in cookie dough. I found this recipe on Pinterest and modified it a bit.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups Garbonzo Beans
1/8 tsp Salt
1/8 tsp Baking Soda
2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
1/4 cup Almond Butter, No Stir (or peanut butter for a peanut buttery taste)
1/2 cup Light Brown Sugar
1/3 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/4 cup Skim Milk
3 tbsp Oatmeal

Directions:
Add all the ingredients except the chocolate chips in a food processor and blend until smooth. Remove from processor and add to serving bowl. Mix in the chocolate chips. Serve with graham crackers or graham cracker sticks.

My opinion:
Even though I know it isn’t real cookie dough, it’s close enough! I’m really tempted to make this for an upcoming party and not tell anyone it’s mostly healthy and see what happens.
