Editor’s Note: Here at Dispatches, we are always looking for ways to help our readers do things. For some of our readers, that means helping navigate the working world, for others, it means assisting in the ever challenging question, what’s for dinner?” For still others, it means figuring out how to balance family life with everything else. In an effort to aid in all of these endeavors, we have collaborated on this article written specifically for our readers.

As a boss, you should hope to instill respect and trust from your employees. There are a few things you can do to help make sure you’ve created an environment that nurtures respect and trust.

Hold The Door
One of the easiest ways to keep open communication is to have an open door policy. Yo should also regularly meet with staff to update them on the business in general. These meetings, especially impromptu ones, are a good time to hear concerns and address potential issues before they grow.

Fun fact: King Arthur had a round table to show that everyone seated at that table was equal. They could express their views freely and challenge leadership if they did not agree on their decision. While a large round table may not be feasible for your business, the concept is one to mimic. Let every employee or advisor have the opportunity to share thoughts and suggestions. Each person brings a slightly different perspective and may be the most needed voice at that moment.

Be loyal
In addition to hearing your employees concerns and ideas, make sure you are standing up for them when necessary. To the extent you can, shield them from the unnecessary criticism and share the praises. If there’s a why behind a request and it is appropriate to share it, do. If your employee should be part of the concept and project discussion from the beginning to avoid unnecessary confusion and potential hurt feelings, include them. That isn’t to say that performance indicators and major issues should not be addressed, just find a way to make corrections private and praise public.

Hire for the personality, train for the job
Make sure that you have people with a wide range of experience on your staff. Particularly, in higher positions. If needed, us an
executive recruitment service to get the best employees for your business. This is a great way to ensure you have a wealth of talent.

Form Alliances
Even if you’re a solopreneur, you still have to work with people and customers. Don’t be afraid to seek out mentors and partners who can help you strengthen your brand. At a minimum, find a trusted advisor and sounding board for when you’re stuck or need a different perspective.
